well I just got back from a rather long vacation of around three weeks give or take a day or two, and had some weird type of delays (I do suggest you don’t fly American Airlines if possible, more on that later). Generally speaking it was a very nice vacation even in spite of these particular travel issues. On the whole I have decided to go with Northwest Airlines next time since they are better I think. I am happy to be back on Kauai, home sweet home at last. One thing in particular that I am looking forward to doing is returning to surfing, one of my hobbies. On this vacation I visited some areas which have top surfing spots in their own right, such as for instance the small island of Barbados which is in (i think) British West Indies (which has been featured in ‘Surfing’ magazine several times and used to be a setting for some real life Pirates of the Caribbean). This time I did not go because I did not have my surfboard with me, and it costs around as much as the board is worth to take it with me (thanks to the airline carriers fees). In addition, they also happen to have a lot of good surf camps in costa rica as well. Anyway, the island of kauai has some truly awesome surfing, and some of the best surfers on the globe, like the Irons’ brothers and Laird Hamilton, to name just a few, happen to be from here. That said however, the surf here is not quite as good as the north shore of Oahu, although it does get just as big, as of course it gets the same wave swells from the stormy Aleutian islands. All in all, the pointed shape of Oahu’s north shore means a better shaped wave for the most part as they roll off the tip. Kauai, for it’s part, has more of a rounded and blunt north shore, sadly enouph, which is not so ideal for wave shape, thus you do not have
the famous Waimea Bays and Pipelines, etc. that the island Oahu is well known for.
